Today the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) has published its Annual Report for the financial year 2019-20, outlining the progress PHIN and the wider sector have made towards greater transparency and supporting patients’ considering their private healthcare options.

London, 15 December 2020: The report provides an update on PHIN’s key achievements in the last year, including the publication of Never Events, our official response to the ADAPt consultation, and a comprehensive view of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on private healthcare in the UK.

PHIN’s Annual Report also outlines some trends across private healthcare annual statistics on activity across private healthcare in the UK in 2019 and 2020:

  • At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in April this year, private activity was down an estimated 86% on the same month in 2019. By September activity was down by only 13% on the previous year. 
  • Patients accessing self-pay care in London pay a small premium for initial consultations, on average paying £250 compared to between £175 and £200 outside of London. 
  • ‘Wrong implant or prosthesis’ was the most common Never Event reported during 2019, with 11 incidents throughout the year.
